William Cefus Powell, 88 years of age, of Blakely, Georgia, died peacefully at home on August 31, 2023. His funeral service will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, September 2, 2023 at Zion Freewill Baptist Church with a visitation beginning at 1:00pm and graveside following at Pine Lawn Gardens Cemetery. Pastor Michael Williams will be officiating the service. Mr. Powell was born in Edison, Georgia, to the late M.C. Powell and Bert Anglin Powell. The family moved to the Lucile community when he was a teenager, and he lived in the Sowhatchee community all of his adult life. Mr. Powell was a 32-year employee at Georgia Pacific and he retired as Shipping Foreman. He also enjoyed farming and working alongside his father, M.C., and his son, David, over the years. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Lucus Johnston. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Evelyn White Powell; four children: Beth Johnston (Bobby) Newville, AL, David Powell (Wendy), Wayne Powell (Trish), and Peggy Jackson (Steve) all of Blakely, GA. Eight grandchildren: Julie Richey (Greg), Meghan Williams (Michael), Mischa Smith, Blake Powell (Brittany), Whitney Tucker (Chris), Caitlyn Powell, Madison Gilmer (Eli), and Stephen Jackson (Emily). Mr. Powell was also blessed with nineteen great-grandchildren. Serving as active pallbearers are Greg Richey, Dalton Cox, Billy Wilson, Brandon Wilkerson, Jeffrey Brackin, Ronnie Willis, Gerald Howard, David Ryan; and serving as honorary pallbearers are Arthur Brackin, Lynwood Anglin, Barney Brownlee, Curt Smith, Harold Still, and Porter Mulkey. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Operation Christmas Child project at Zion Freewill Baptist Church in his memory. The family would like to recognize and express their gratitude to the staff of Georgia Hospice Care for their kind and loving care.
