Virginia Anne Baxley-Brown

Virginia Anne Holder Baxley-Brown of Blakely, Georgia, died peacefully at her home on July 8, 2018.She was born in Jefferson, Georgia, on November 4, 1918, the daughter of Franklin Pendergrass Holder and Virginia Mae Edmondson Holder. She graduated from Martin Institute in Jefferson in 1934 at the age of fifteen and from Georgia State College for Women in 1938 with a B. S. major in dietetics and a minor in chemistry.She was a member of the symphony orchestra for all four years of college.

On Valentine's Day in 1939 she was married to Dr. Warren Candler Baxley.They moved to Blakely, Georgia, in May 1939.She assisted her husband in his office as he established his medical practice.They became the parents of three children: Warren Candler Baxley, Jr., Angeline Holder Baxley Yutzler and Thomas Henry Baxley.

When her children were young, she was very involved in their activities, including being a Campfire and Bluebirds leader, a Cub Scout Den Mother, member of the PTA and school grade mother.

Her hobbies included reading, oil painting, astronomy, flower arranging, listening to symphonic music, and bird watching.In later years she enthusiastically followed the Berry College Eagles annually from the laying of the first egg to fledging of the eaglets.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Blakely, Georgia, Mayflower Society, The Pilgrim John Howland Society, the American Legion Auxiliary for over 50 years, Peter Early Chapter of D. A. R., and a charter member of both the Blakely Garden Club and The Fine Arts Club.In 1957 she was selected by the Blakely Pilot Club as Woman of the Year for Blakely and Early County.

After the death of Dr. Baxley, she was married in 1982 to the Rev. Charles Bert Brown, an Episcopal Priest. She was preceded in death by both husbands, her parents, her brothers, Dr. James S. Holder and Dr. Franklin P. Holder, Jr., and a sister, Marjorie Holder Camp.

She is survived by her children: Warren Candler Baxley, Jr. (Sheila), Angeline Holder Baxley Yutzler (Skip) and Thomas Henry Baxley(Kevin), six grandchildren: Virginia Holder Baxley Winn (Harlan), Laura Allen Baxley, Jeffrey Parker Yutzler, Lisa Baxley Yutzler Zippelius (Pete), Katherine Elizabeth Baxley- Bowen (Brandon) and Candler Thomas Baxley (Merrill), twelve great grandchildren: Anne Baxley Winn, Harlan Frank Winn IV, Virginia Thomas Winn, Charlotte Allen Winn, Heather Athena Yutzler, Mason Parker Zippelius, William Warren Zippelius, Thomas Lowell Bowen, Katherine Holder Bowen, Kyle Thomas Baxley, Beck Candler Baxley and Ellie Claire Baxley, and two stepsons, Kris Brown and Kent Brown.

A private graveside service for the immediate family will be held on July 22, 2018. Officiating will be Dr. Alex Howell and Dr. Joe Clift. Pallbearers will be Harlan Frank Winn III, Jeffrey Parker Yutzler, Peter John Zippelius, Candler Thomas Baxley, Brandon Lowell Bowen and Harlan Frank Winn IV.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, P. O. Box 186, Blakely, Georgia, or your favorite charity.
