Thelma Palmer Dews, 84, died November 3, 2019, at Canterbury Court in Atlanta. Mrs. Dews was born July 10, 1935, in Cuthbert,Ga., to the late Grover Talmadge Palmer and Eunice Burgay Palmer. She graduated from Edison High School in 1953, having the distinction of being a member of the first class in Edison to attend 12 grades. She graduated from Georgia State
College for Women in 1957 with a BA degree in English and Spanish.
Mrs. Dews began a 30-year career as an educator in the Randolph County School System, teaching high school English for one year in Shellman and another year in Cuthbert. She spent the remainder of her career in the Calhoun County School System, first teaching English and reading at the secondary level and eventually serving as Media Specialist at the
elementary level. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Dews was preceded in death by her husband, Alton Lovell Dews, and a brother, Grover Talmadge Palmer.
Survivors include her four children: Alton Lovell Dews (Cornelia), Mechanicsville, Va.; David Palmer Dews, Boise, Id.; Steven Kirk Dews, Atlanta; and Catherine Dews Dorrien (Brian) of Dunwoody, Ga. Her 5 grandchildren are Alton and Cate Dews of Mechanicsville, Va., and
Anna Grace, Cage, and Leah Dorrien of Dunwoody, Ga. She has one surviving cousin, Elizabeth Bryan of Homestead, Fl.
The family will have a graveside service on November 16 at 11:00 A.M. at Blakely Cemetery. At 1:00 P.M. on the same day, the family will have a second graveside service at Salem Cemetery in Edison for her brother, Grover Talmadge Palmer, who passed away in September 2018. Reverend Keith Gaines will officiate at both services.
