Steve Coleman passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 10, 2023. Stephen Daniel Coleman, III was born to Eleanor King Coleman and Stephen Daniel Coleman, Jr. on April 22, 1950. Steve grew up on his family’s farm just outside of Fort Gaines, working from a young age at the nursery owned and run by his grandparents and parents, S D Coleman Nurseries. He graduated from Fort Gaines High School in 1969 and then from Sparks Technical School in Eufaula, Alabama. In 1974 Steve married the love of his life, Rhonda Kerr. They lived in Fort Gaines and in 1989 moved to Blakely. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Eleanor. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Rhonda Kerr Coleman of Blakely, his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Ann Coleman, and his grandchildren Scott “Daniel” and Mary Remington Coleman, all of St. Simons Island. He is also survived by his sisters, Caroline Coleman of Fort Gaines and Elizabeth “Betty” Clewis (Fred) of Stanley, North Carolina and many other extended family members. Steve worked for Kennedy Forest Services for the last 32 years. He loved his work and always said he would work until he could not find his way to the woods. Steve was active at First Baptist Church of Blakely, and he quietly served his church in a number of ways. Steve was a mentor and friend to many and held court early most mornings at Smitty’s Grill. He loved people of all walks of life and was gifted at encouraging others. Steve’s pride and joy were his grandchildren, he especially loved spending time with them at the family farm and on the Georgia coast. Friends and family are invited to a visitation at First Baptist Church of Blakely on Saturday, May 13th from 1-2 PM. A service will follow the visitation at 2PM with Lyle Brackin and Keith Alderman officiating.. Following the service at First Baptist, there will be abrief service at New Park Cemetery in Fort Gaines. Donations may be made in memory of Steve to First Baptist Church of Blakely, Georgia.
