Max M. Holman

Mr. Max Milligan Holman, Sr., 91, of Damascus-Hilton Rd., Blakely, Ga. passed away Saturday night, December 9, 2017 at the Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan, Al. The funeral will be held Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at 2 PM in the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Alex Howell and Rev. Scott Brenton officiating. The family will receive friends for a visitation starting at 1 PM until 1:45 PM, prior to the funeral service. Burial will follow the funeral in the Blakely Cemetery. Active Pallbearers will be Lodge Holman, Ward Holman, Heard Smith, Thornton DeRosa, Spinks Holman, Jay Barrows, Dee Grist and William Merritt. Honorary Pallbearers will be Wally Robertson and the Methodist Men's Bible Class, members of the First State Bank Board of Directors, Johnny Holman, Buck Grist, Johnson Perry and Taylor Bridges.

Mr. Holman was born in Blakely, GA on August 7, 1926 to the late Grady Holman, Sr. and May Fulton Holman. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 sisters: Virginia H. DeRosa, Carolyn H. Smith and by 2 brothers: John C. Holman and Grady Holman, Jr.

Mr. Holman graduated from high school in Blakely in 1943 and then attended and graduated from the Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Ga. in 1944 and during WWII was a U. S. Merchant Marine, and graduated from their Academy in 1945. From 1946 through 1948 he was enrolled in a 2 year program at ABAC in Tifton, Ga. He then attended Auburn University, was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and graduated in 1950 with a B.A. Degree in Ag-Science and Animal Husbandry. He then was enrolled in the U. S. Army Officers' Candidate School (OCS) in Ft. Knox Kentucky and was a First Lt. in the U. S. army during the Korean Conflict from 1951 until 1953. Upon his return home to Blakely, he held several positions at the then ASCS/USDA office in Blakely and became the District Director for 35 years. He was also a farmer, a 40 year member of the Board of Directors of the First State Bank of Blakely and was a Certified Appraiser. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he held many offices including a member of the Administrative Board and was a proud member of the Men's Bible Class and the Men's Bible Class Choir.

His survivors include his wife: Anne Swann Holman of Blakely, GA, 2 daughters: Sammie Holman and Jeanne Holman Williamson and Robert, all of Blakely, a son: Max M. "Jay" Holman, Jr. and Tami of Jakin, GA, a step-daughter: Rhonda Matson and Gregory of Pensacola, FL and a step-son: Rusty Merritt and Elaine of Mitchell, GA. His sister is Helen Holman O'Neil of Weatherford, TX. and a brother, Jimmy Holman of Arlington, GA. There are 8 grandchildren: Katie Davis and Daniel of Albany, GA, Jay Barrows and Cindy of Bluffton, GA, LeAnna Matson of Pensacola, Fl, Betsy Perkins and Troy of Richland, WA, Spinks Holman and Sarah of Blakely, Lorie Clenney and Beau of Blakely, Stanton Harrell of Atlanta and William Merritt of Mitchell, GA. and 13 great grandchildren.
