Kathryn (Kathy) Rice Proulx , age 72, passed away at her home in Strafford, New Hampshire Thursday, May 5, 2016. Kathy was born April 23,1944 in Blakely, Georgia to Jean Barton ("J.B.") and Mary Kathryn (Patrick) Rice. She was the youngest of three and the only girl. Kathy attended public school in Blakely, graduated from Blakely High School in 1962 and attended University of Georgia where she majored in Home Economics and was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. Though a large part of Kathy's heart remained in Georgia, the majority of her time on earth was lived in New Hampshire where she raised her children. She loved living on Bow Lake and watching her children and grandchildren enjoy the many times spent there. Her special interests and hobbies centered around raising a family. Following the death of her first son, David (Davey) who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Kathy established a foundation called "Davey's Dream" that was to benefit families of children with disabilities for whom finances were a burden. Kathy's ties to her family and friends in Georgia remained strong throughout her life. One of her annual events for many years was a trip back to her roots in Georgia. She was faithful in maintaining family connections there and especially those ties with her lifetime friends. In recent years, Kathy's declining health prevented those annual visits south, so she continued via regular phone calls. A big part of her heart would remain in Georgia until the end.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Jean and Kathryn Rice, a brother, James (Jimmy) and a son, David (Davey). Surviving family members include her brother, Charles (Catherine) Rice, her children, Richard (Melissa) Proulx, Jr. , Diane (Vincent) Christofora, and Donna Holland, grandchildren, Richard, William, Vincent, Anthony, and Jack. Kathy's surviving extended family include nephews Barton (Andrea) Rice, Eric (Nicole) Rice, Michael Rice, nieces Kimberly Kaufman, Glenda VanLandingham, Whitney Deese, and many great-nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Kathy's life took place on May 12, 2016 at Brewitt Funeral Home in Exeter, NH. Kathy will make her final trip home to Blakely, Georgia and will be laid to rest beside her mother and father. Her Georgia family and friends will gather for a celebration of her life Saturday, June 4, 2016. There will be a luncheon in the Community Center across from First Baptist Church at 11:30 AM followed by services at First Baptist at 12:30. Burial will take place at 1:30 PM at Blakely Cemetery.
Georgia funeral arrangements are being handled by Manry Jordan Hodges Funeral Home, Blakely, Georgia.
