Despite being undersized for the position he started at guard for the Southerners.

Joe and Tina were married on November 21, 1964, and shortly thereafter they moved DeFuniak Springs, Florida.Joe and Tina both taught at Walton High School before moving to Blakely where they continued teaching at Early County High School until they retired in 1999.
"Coach Owen" coached hundreds of young men during his 34-year career. He is remembered for his quick witted, sarcastic sense of humor and for his aggressive style of coaching. He pushed his players to be the best that they could be, but at the same time he demonstrated genuine compassion for the kids that he coached.
Joe is remembered by most for being exactly who he was.He did things the way that he wanted and didn't care what anyone else thought. Joe was not reluctant to say exactly what was on his mind. If you asked a question you were guaranteed to get an honest answer.
Joe and Tina moved to Griffin, Georgia, in 2017 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. He missed Blakely every day thereafter.Joe stayed in touch with friends and family in his hometown, and always kept track of his beloved Bobcats.
