Former Sheriff Jimmie Ray Murkerson, 71, passed away early Sunday morning, Jan. 27, 2019 in Blakely, Ga. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, February 1, 2019, at 2. p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church with Rev. Jerry Murkerson officiating.The family will receive friends for Visitationin the church sanctuary beginning at 1 p.m.

Mr. Murkerson was born on June 7, 1947 in Blakely, GA to the late Leon Martin Murkerson and Cherrie Nobles Murkerson. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Ray Murkerson. Jimmie was the original owner of Early Tree Service and Blakely Floor Covering, was a farmer, former Blakely City Councilman and was sheriff of Early County for 28 years. In 2011 he was awarded the Sheriff of the Year Award and the Governor's Peace Officers Award. He was also an veteran of the Vietnam War having served 4 years in the U. S. Air Force.

His survivors include his wife, Sarah Ann Rabon Murkerson of Blakely, GA, a daughter, Tracie Murkerson, also of Blakely, a son, J. D. Murkerson of Dothan, AL. Also surviving are his sister, Debra Anderson and Steve, a brother, Jesse Murkerson and a sister-in-law, Mary Murkerson, all of Blakely, GA. and a Brother-in-law Roscoe Rabon (Barbara) of Cowarts, AL. He has three grandchildren: Shelbie Morris of Columbia, AL, Blaine Murkerson of Blakely and Garrett Murkerson of Dothan, AL.

The family will be gathering at the home of Debra and Steve Anderson, 177 Hilton Drive, Blakely, Ga.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the Georgia Sheriffs' Youth Homes, P. O. Box 1000, Stockbridge, GA.30281
