George Washington "Foots" Jones of Blakely passed away on Saturday afternoon, August 08, 2020, at Southeast Health Medical Center in Dothan, AL.
A graveside service will be held on Monday morning, August 10, 2020, at 10:00 EST. in Blakely Cemetery with Rev. Yancey Hartman officiating.In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to Southside Baptist Church, 22240 Lucile Rd., Blakely, GA39823.
Foots was born September 11, 1939 in Early County to the late Lester Byron "Casey" and Frances Montaree Owen Jones.When the work was done on the family farm, he enjoyed playing football.His athleticism took him to the University of Southern Mississippi where he played for the Golden Eagles and received his bachelor's degree.After coaching football for a few years at Guntersville High School (AL), Foots was drafted by the U.S. Army to serve our country during the Vietnam War.While doing civilian work at Redstone Arsenal, he played football for the Huntsville Rockets for twelve years along with being a deputy sheriff for the Madison County, AL Sheriff's Office.Foots completed his career at Fort Stewart where he was a logistics manager and returned to Blakely in 2010.He was a longtime Freemason and Shriner along with being a member ofSouthside Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of over forty-eight years, Dian Schollenberger Jones; one son, Chris Wild and wife Debra of Madison, AL, and one step-son Jeffrey Wild and wife Trish of Tampa, FL.; two siblings, Frances Coleman and Guy Jones, both of Blakely; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous extended family members and friends.
In addition to his parents, Foots was preceded in death by two siblings, Tom Jones and his wife Virginia and Sid Jones along with his brother-in-law, Larry Coleman.
