Edward Dowd Morton, Jr., 72, of Atlanta, died Saturday, May 26, 2018 at Emory University Hospital. Mr. Morton was born July 17, 1945 at Moody Air Force Base, Valdosta, Ga. to the late Vivian Stanford Morton and Edward Dowd Morton of Blakely, Ga. Edward grew up in Blakely, graduating from Blakely High School in 1963 and later earning an undergraduate degree from North Georgia College, Dahlonega, Ga. He served in the U. S. Air Force as a pilot after graduating from flight school at Williams Air Force Base, Phoenix, AZ. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam from 1970-71. He completed his 6 years of service as an Instructor Pilot at Columbus Air Force Base, Columbus, MS. He attained the rank of captain.
He is survived by a brother, Robert Morton and Robert's wife, Gregory Faris Morton, of Atlanta, two sons Brian James Morton of Atlanta and David Woodrow Morton of Rochester, NY, a daughter, Lindsay Brigette Morton, of Statesboro, Ga., nieces Molly Morton Sipp (Andy) and Rebecca Morton Dickey (David), of Atlanta, 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He continued his love of flying for many years as a civilian pilot. Ed was an accomplished golfer in his heyday.
Visitation will be held at the Manry Jordan Hodges funeral home in Blakely, Thursday, May 31st from 12-1. Graveside service will be held at the Blakely Cemetery at 1:00pm with Dr. Alex Howell officiating.
