It is with love that we remember Charles Allen Mathis, Sr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, at the age of 78. A resident of Arlington, Georgia, Charlie was surrounded by family and loved ones in his final moments. Born on March 25, 1946, in Worth County, GA, Charlie spent a lifetime dedicated to his family and his community. He was the owner of Mathis Farms, where he spent decades cultivating the land and nurturing both crops and family traditions. Charlie also dedicated years of service to his country as a proud member of the Marine Corps Reserves. He also gave generously of his time and wisdom by serving on numerous boards, including the Farm Service Agency (FSA), Arlington Peanut Company, Arlington Recreation, First State Bank of Arlington, Southwest Georgia Academy, and various church committees. Charlie, known as Papa to everyone, was a remarkable man with a deep love for simplicity, family, and tradition. His quirks and habits, like his appreciation for a firm handshake and eye contact, show how much he valued respect and connection with others. For holidays, he preferred receiving practical gifts such as office supplies and postage stamps, speaking to his simplicity and always ensuring others needs and wants came before his. Charlie was happiest on the farm or at a ballgame watching his grandsons play ball. For over 30 years, Charlie dedicated his time keeping the books for the Southwest Georgia Academy boys’ basketball team. One of Charlie’s favorite hobbies was playing men’s softball where he developed lifelong friendships. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Shirley Timmons Mathis, and his devoted sons, Chad Mathis and Al Mathis, along with Al's wife, Brittney. He leaves behind five treasured grandsons, Brooks, Brock, Banks, Anderson, and Wynn, all of Arlington, Georgia. Charlie was preceded in death by his siblings, Janie Little, Jess Mathis, Arthur G. Mathis, and Sally Phiel, with whom he shared fond memories. The family will receive visitors on Friday, January 3, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Milford Baptist Church in Leary, Georgia preceding the service at 11:00 AM to celebrate and honor Charlie’s life. Grandsons, along with Matt Stuart, Troy Hatcher, and Jason Timmons, will serve as pallbearers, a testament to the enduring legacy Charlie has left on those around him. In place of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Charlie’s honor to Milford Baptist Church, a place close to his heart. Arrangements have been entrusted to Manry-Jordan-Hodges Funeral Home in Blakely, Georgia.
